3 levels and 10,000 hours to Excellence

The popular theory by Malcolm Gladwell is that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to be elite. Very few get far without putting in the time. Our 3 levels of training give rep athletes the ability to add an hour of training every week, right at their skill level. Training is led by Galen Plett, with 28 years of coaching experience, including 8 at a college level.

Level 4 - Rep Development

At this level, players are getting fairly consistent with basic skills in 1 on 1 situations and more advanced skills without defense. Shooting form is becoming consistently good but requires refinement on the move and at game speed. Proper footwork for shot setup is critical at this level. Players begin to develop a variety of layup finishes with both hands, the ability to read the play while handling the ball, basic basketball concepts such as dribble hand offs and various screens from both an offensive and defensive perspective. Players learn situational skills such as post-ups and box-outs. Players learn how to read the defense when driving to the basket and how to move without the ball as teammates drive. The ideal age for this level is 10-14 and players should expect to train 500 – 1,500 hours at this level.

Level 5 - Elite Rep Development

At this level, players are able to make a variety of plays at speed against defense geared to stop them while routinely making good basketball decisions. Players are able to play with each hand with their head up against pressure and understand most basketball concepts. Players begin to develop and refine their own game, perfecting their best moves and building counters to any defense. Players will work on playing quicker and stronger and making basketball reads faster and more consistently. Players learn to use more deception to manipulate defenses and precision to make strong accurate passes off the dribble with either hand. Players begin to learn subtle tricks that allow players to play physically without fouling. Shooting is refined so that all shots, even on the move, look the same. Shooting takes its final form with a high release point and hundreds of thousands of shots are required to become consistent. Players should begin to consistently train for strength (at least 13-14 years old), speed and agility outside of basketball practice. The ideal age for this level is 12-16 and players should expect to train 1,000 – 3,000 hours in this level.

Level 6 - Elite College Prep (Future)

To reach this level players have mastered most parts of the game and consistently make good decisions and plays while playing against the highest level of competition in their age group. At this level it’s not so much about adding to your game as much as increasing the speed, precision and toughness (both mentally and physically) of play and decision making. Players must play against players who are stronger and faster. Players need thousands of reps with key plays such as ball screens on both offense and defense. Players already know how read the defense. Now they learn to anticipate and think one step ahead. Shooting must be flawless and consistent even at high speed. Players must refine finishing packages to finish in the lane against players playing well above the rim. Players must push their own physical limits to reach the 99th percentile for speed and agility as well as maintaining excellent strength and elite cardiovascular endurance. Players at this level benefit from personal training. The ideal age for this level is 14-19 and players should expect to train at this level for 2,000 – 6,000 hours to earn a scholarship.
